State Opening of Parliament

Each year the Sovereign drives in State to Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament. This is usually in November but it may take place at other times, or even more than once a year if there is a change of government.

The ceremony takes place in the House of Lords and the Commons are summoned to hear 'The Queen's Speech from the Throne', formally opening the next session of her Parliament and setting out the policies of her Government. There is room for only a very few spectators inside the Palace of Westminster and tickets are difficult to obtain but, through television, the ceremony has been made available to everyone.
